What interviewers look for in a Interaction Designer
- User-first reasoning backed by evidence, not opinion
- Prioritization under constraints — what you cut and why
- How you work with engineers and stakeholders when goals conflict
Likely Interaction Designer interview questions
1. Can you walk us through your design process from initial brief to final handoff?
Mention research, ideation, prototyping, testing, iteration, and collaboration with stakeholders.
2. Tell me about a time you had to design for a user group very different from yourself. How did you approach it?
Highlight empathy research methods (interviews, personas, user testing) and how insights shaped decisions.
3. Describe your experience with interaction patterns and when you'd use them versus creating something custom.
Show knowledge of standard patterns (tabs, modals, forms) and reasoning about consistency vs. innovation.
4. How do you balance user needs with business goals when they conflict?
Demonstrate stakeholder management, data-driven trade-offs, and ability to advocate for users while understanding product strategy.
5. What's your experience with accessibility in interaction design? Give a specific example.
Cover WCAG awareness, keyboard navigation, screen readers, testing methods, and proactive inclusion thinking.
6. Walk us through how you'd approach designing interactions for a mobile app versus a desktop web platform.
Discuss context of use, input methods, screen real estate, gesture vs. click, performance, and platform conventions.
7. Tell me about a time your design didn't work as intended. What did you learn?
Show humility, post-launch testing/analytics review, quick iteration, and concrete changes made based on real user feedback.
8. How do you handle design feedback and critique, especially when you disagree?
Demonstrate receptiveness, ability to defend decisions with data/research, collaborative spirit, and knowing when to push back vs. adapt.
9. Describe your experience with design systems. How do you maintain interaction consistency at scale?
Cover component documentation, interaction states, guidelines creation, and balancing flexibility with standardization.
10. How do you approach designing for complex, multi-step user flows or workflows?
Mention mental models, progressive disclosure, microinteractions, feedback mechanisms, error handling, and progress indication.
11. Tell us about your experience collaborating with engineers. How do you ensure your interactions are feasible?
Show knowledge of technical constraints, early engineering involvement, documentation depth, and respectful problem-solving of implementation gaps.
12. How would you measure the success of an interaction design? What metrics matter to you?
Balance qualitative (user testing, sentiment) with quantitative (task completion, time on task, error rates, engagement) and show understanding of business metrics.
