- How you debug — the process, not just the fix
- Collaboration signals: code review, disagreements, mentoring
Likely Scala Developer interview questions
1. Can you walk us through your experience with Scala? What projects have you worked on?
Mention specific Scala versions, project scale, team size, and key responsibilities or achievements.
2. Explain the difference between `val` and `var` in Scala and when you would use each.
Emphasize immutability preference, explain that `val` is immutable reference while `var` allows reassignment.
3. What are case classes and why are they useful in Scala?
Cover pattern matching, automatic equals/hashCode, copy method, and use cases in data modeling.
4. Describe your experience with functional programming concepts. Which ones do you use most?
Discuss first-class functions, higher-order functions, map/filter/fold, immutability, and pure functions.
5. How would you handle errors in Scala without using exceptions? Explain Option and Either types.
Show understanding of Option[T] for nullable values, Either[L,R] for error handling, and monadic operations.
6. Tell us about a time you debugged a complex issue in Scala. What was your approach?
Highlight systematic debugging, use of tools/logging, understanding of type system, and problem-solving methodology.
7. What are implicits in Scala and how do you use them responsibly?
Explain implicit parameters, implicit conversions, type classes; mention when they're helpful vs. confusing.
8. Explain the difference between a Seq, List, Vector, and Stream. When would you choose each?
Discuss performance characteristics (access time, construction, immutability), use cases, and lazy evaluation with Streams.
9. Describe your experience with Akka or another concurrency framework. How did you structure actor systems?
Cover actor model, message passing, supervision strategies, and real-world distributed system patterns implemented.
10. How do you design testable Scala code? What testing frameworks do you prefer and why?
Discuss ScalaTest/Specs2, property-based testing with ScalaCheck, mocking, and functional programming benefits for testing.
11. Walk us through a scenario where you had to optimize Scala code for performance. What tools did you use?
Mention profiling, JVM tuning, algorithmic improvements, immutability trade-offs, and JMH benchmarking.
12. Design a system to process millions of events in real-time using Scala. What technologies and patterns would you use?
Discuss Akka Streams/Kafka integration, backpressure handling, fault tolerance, scalability, and monitoring considerations.
